The Political Science/Political Philosophy (48) test has retired.

The History/Social Science (73) test will be used for the Social Science 5–12 license when it is available beginning in early 2023. For information about licensure, visit the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, MTEL website.

Format

Computer-based test (CBT) and online proctored test; 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-response assignments

Time

Computer-Based Testing
4 hours and 15 minutes total appointment time

• 15 minutes for CBT tutorial and nondisclosure agreement
• 4 hours testing time

Online Proctoring
4 hours and 30 minutes total appointment time

• 15 minutes for tutorial and nondisclosure agreement
• 2 hours 15 minutes for the multiple-choice questions
• 15 minutes for optional break
• 1 hour 45 minutes for the open-response assignments

You may take restroom breaks during testing. Time taken for breaks is considered part of the available testing time.

Score reports may be delayed for up to 2 weeks for candidates taking this test via online proctoring.
Candidates taking an online-proctored test will not receive a receipt of completion when their test ends.

Breaks in Online-Proctored Testing

When taking this test in an online-proctored appointment, examinees will receive a 15-minute break after the multiple-choice section and before the open-response section. Note that after this break you will begin the open-response assignments and you will no longer have access to the multiple-choice questions.
