A MEPID Is Now Required for MTEL Registration

If you have questions about accessing your MEPID number, please contact the Office of Educator Licensure Call Center, Monday–Friday 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. EST at 781-338-6600.

Beginning October 18, 2016, all candidates registering to take the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) will be required to enter a MEPID (Massachusetts Education Personnel ID) number in order to register for a test. Before registering for the MTEL, you must know your MEPID number.

What is a MEPID?
Is there a fee to obtain a MEPID?

A MEPID number is a unique identifier assigned to educators and to employees of a school district, charter school, or collaborative in Massachusetts. There is no fee to obtain a MEPID.

How are MEPID numbers assigned?

A MEPID number is assigned to anyone who creates a profile in the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Educator Licensure and Renewal system (ELAR). A MEPID may also be assigned by the district, charter school, or collaborative where you are employed.

How do I create a profile in ELAR? How can I check to see if I have an ELAR profile?

Prior to registering for the MTEL, check to see if you have an ELAR profile with a MEPID number. Go to User Registration Link opens in a new window on the Office of Educator Licensure web page to determine if you already have a profile or to create a profile and be assigned a MEPID number. Note: your name in your ELAR profile and MTEL account must exactly match your name on the government-issued identification you will bring to the test center.

You most likely have a MEPID number assigned to you whether or not you have an ELAR profile.

  1. If you have an ELAR profile with a MEPID number, verify with your HR department or "EPIMS contact" that the MEPID in your profile is the same as was assigned to you by your school district, charter school, or collaborative. To find your EPIMS contact, go to the ESE School and District Profiles "People Search" page Opens in a new window and select "EPIMS CONTACT".
  2. If after contacting your HR department or EPIMS contact, it is determined that you have two different MEPID numbers, your district, charter school, or collaborative will need to notify ESE of the discrepancy so that it can be resolved.
  3. If you need to register for the MTEL before the discrepancy is resolved, register using one of the MEPIDs assigned to you. Before you take the test, you may update the MEPID number in your account.
  4. If you cannot resolve the MEPID discrepancy and/or update your account prior to taking the test, there may be a brief delay in posting your test results to ELAR.

I have an ELAR profile. Where do I find my MEPID number?

Log into ELAR Link opens in a new window. At the Welcome Page, select "Check license status and history, make a payment" to see your profile that includes a MEPID. The MEPID number should appear in the "Inquiry - Activity Summary" page, above your name.

I don't see a MEPID in my ELAR profile, what should I do?

If a MEPID is not shown in your ELAR profile, this may indicate that you may have already been assigned a MEPID under a separate ELAR profile with similar characteristics and, therefore, ELAR was not able to issue you another MEPID. To resolve this issue, please contact the Office of Educator Licensure Call Center, Monday–Friday 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. EST at 781-338-6600.

I tried to register but received an error message after entering my MEPID number. What should I do?

As a result of a change in the Educator Licensure and Renewal (ELAR) system for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as of May 2024, candidates will temporarily need to wait up to 24 hours from receiving a new Massachusetts Education Personnel ID (MEPID), to register for the MTEL. As an example, if you created an ELAR profile and received a MEPID on May 12th, you would need to wait until May 13th to use that MEPID number for your MTEL registration. This wait time will not impact candidates who had MEPIDs prior to the May 2024 change in the ELAR system.

Check your MEPID number in your ELAR profile to be sure you are entering it correctly.

If you continue to receive an error after confirming your MEPID number, check that the following personal information matches exactly both in your account on this website and in your ELAR profile:

  • your social security number
  • your name and date of birth on the government-issued identification you will bring to the test center.

If you need to update any information in your account on this website, review how to update your account.

If you need help to update any information in your ELAR profile, contact the Office of Educator Licensure Call Center at the number provided above.
